MONO.COM is a tiny (about 200 byte) TSR that emulates monochrome modes 07 and
0F on an EGA or VGA machine with color monitor. Original IBM EGA BIOS doesn't
support this. Niether do many clones - mine, when put to mode 7 (without MONO
loaded), blanks display & makes very strange sounds. It's interesting that this
is NOT because hardware can't do this - just a flaw of BIOS.
The only major difference between true MDA mode 7 & this emulated by MONO is
that the last supports more attribute combinations - for example you can have
bright foreground on normal intensity background. But, I guess, this shouldn't
be a problem.
You may wonder why would one want to use monochrome modes with color monitor.
Well, for example to test if your program can run in these modes. Also, if a
program uses some odd color scheme, you may be able to get more readable display
by running it in mode 7. Finally, there are still some older programs around
that can run ONLY in monochrome mode ...
VMODE.COM sets a mode to a specified hex. number (say, "VMODE F" to set 640X350
monochrome graphics). Perfect for playing with MONO (by the way, don't use DOS
MODE command to set video mode when MONO is loaded - it'll go wrong).
These programs are freeware. You are encouraged to distribute them either
separately or as a part of your own programs. (of course - just look at their
sizes...)
